Sump pumps are an important and often over looked appliance. If your house is on property that has a high water table, there could be water that seeps into your foundation and basement. Often, the seepage happens during heavy rains or when there is an excessive amount of snow melt. Depending on the amount of water, you could have anything from a little bit of dampness to major flooding. This is where a sump pump comes in.
A sump pump is essentially made up of two parts: the actual mechanical pump and a float switch. The entire assembly is placed in a pit in the lowest level of a basement. When the water rises enough, it lifts the float enough to activate the pump which then, forces the water out through a discharge pipe. Without a working sump pump, basements run the risk of becoming flooded and causing damage to to appliances, framing, dry wall and so much more.
One of the important things to think of when having a sump pump installed is the addition of a battery backup. Because they run on electricity, power failure is something that can happen during big storms and having a sump pump without power defeats it’s usefulness. A wise investment is the addition of a battery backup. This way you have a second line of defense against flooding and water damage.
